Men's Baseball Coaches

Mike Mauro

Head Coach

2nd Season

Having served one year as a voluteer assistant coach in 2008, Mauro just recently completed his first season as CSI's Head Men's Baseball Coach, and took home CUNYAC Coach of the Year honors in 2009, leading a predominantly young squad to a 19-20 season.

Mauro’s coaching experience expands far beyond his service to CSI. In 2000, he was named an assistant coach at Tottenville High School, a position he had until his assistant coaching position at CSI. There, he was a part of three PSAL City Championships, earning the Northeast High School Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2003. Prior to joining the Pirates, Mauro had assistant coaching stops at New Utrecht High School (1999-00) and Moore Catholic High School (1996-97).

An accomplished player, Mauro started his college career at John Jay College and played for three years, twice being named CUNYAC and Knickerbocker Conference All-Star while twice named NCAA Division III 2nd-team All-American at shortstop. He was voted CUNYAC Most Valuable Player in 1990, batting .540 for the Bloodhounds, and finishing his career with 89 stolen bases (45 consecutive stolen).

Upon finishing his junior season, Mauro signed a professional free-agent contract with Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers. The infielder played for the Bristol Tigers (American League) and was promoted to the Niagara Falls Rapids of the Class A (New York Penn League).

After being released by the Tigers in 1991, Mauro joined the New York Police Department, and finished his studies at the College of Staten Island, earning a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Now, he returns as the school’s head baseball coach.

A Staten Island native, Mauro and his wife, Janene, reside in Sunnyside, Staten Island, with their children Alexandra and Michael, Jr.
