The Dolphins are now 0-2 to start the season, while the Pioneers have run their season-opening win skein to 4-0.

The visitors were crisp from start to finish, earning a host of attacks and scoring blocks of points via the service. In the opener, WPU nursed a thin, 9-8, advantage, before the Pioneers called for timeout, and they regrouped to score the 25-14 win. The Pioneers whipped up 10 kills in the frame next to just two errors.

WPU was more effective in games two and three, out-killing the Dolphins, 17-10, and committing just four attack errors to the Dolphins' 16. In the meantime, the visitors piled up a game-total 17 service aces, compiling 24 assists to the Dolphins' 13.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL FALL TO ST. Co-captains Joanna Tepedino and Danielle Ponsiglione led the team. Senior Tepedino had five kills, two digs and a service ace while setter Ponsiglione had four assists. Sophomore Kaitlyn Flynn and freshman Vasiliki sterguila both had 3 digs apiece.

CSI struggled with 18 receiving errors and six block errors.

Next up for the Dolphins will be William Paterson on Thursday, September 9th. Quiles, who doubles as an assistant coach for the women's softball team and was also a standout in that sport will continue in that capacity as well. A search for a permanent replacement will commence at the conclusion of the season.

"We are very fortunate to have a returning assistant volleyball coach and four year CSI volleyball player in Melissa Quiles in place to accept the appointment," said Vernon Mummert, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "With Coach Quiles' knowledge of the game and her familiarity with the CUNYAC volleyball competition, our team should not miss a beat this year."

The appointment of Quiles to the position of head coach is well deserved. A four-year standout for the Dolphins from 2001-04, Quiles was a two-year captain and a versatile part of the lineup, totalling 149 kills, 149 service aces, and 566 digs. Quiles immediately joined the sidelines in 2005, serving one year as assistant coach under former head coach Jason Fein before spending the next four years as Ruesing's top assistant.

The schedules include a host of intriguing dates and match ups, as well as a collection of over 30 broadcasts on CSI SportsNet, the home of CSI Athletics webcasting available through www.csidolphins.com.

The CSI Soccer teams are looking to bounce back after subpar 2009 campaigns. The five-time back-to-back CUNYAC Champs on the women's side were finally dethroned in 2009 to new champion City College of New York, and the two teams will meet twice during the season, including a home date on October 13 that will mark CSI's second annual Kick for a Cure, designed to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative. The season will also see the introduction of new CUNYAC-rivals John Jay College, who will sport a women's soccer team for the first time since 2004. CSI will face the Bloodhounds twice as well (home on September 21, away on October 15).

Under third-year head coach Armen Simoniants, the CSI men will be looking to improve on a four-win campaign that saw them on the outside looking-in come playoff time. The team will introduce the fall season with a 3:30pm non-conference face-off with Polytechnic University on September 1. The team will play its first four games on the road, before returning home to play four out of the next five at home between September 11-22.

LAMANNA & BASHA NAMED FALL SPORTS ALL-STARS

College of Staten Island standouts Lisa Lamanna and Alba Basha were named all-stars in their respective sports by way of the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Lamanna, a junior torch-bearer with the Women’s Cross-Country team was given the CUNYAC’s inaugural Sportsmanship Award in her respective sport, while Basha, the former CUNYAC Libero of the Year in Women’s Volleyball was named a 1st-team All-Star, joining five other standout players.
Lamanna enjoyed another year of rousing success for the Dolphins. A member of the squad since CSI became a varsity program in 2007, Lamanna did not disappoint on the trails this season. She finished tops amongst CSI runners in every meet this season, and her top time of 26:40 in the 6k Brooklyn College Invitational was good for first overall in the field. She enjoyed a total of three Top Five finishes this season, including her time at the CUNYAC Championship, where she came in second overall.

VOLLEYBALL TURNED ASIDE BY LEHMAN IN CUNY QUARTERS

The College of Staten Island women’s volleyball season came to an end this evening, as the Dolphins fell in straight games to the No. 4 seeded Lehman College Lightning in CUNYAC Postseason Quarterfinal play at the Apex Center in the Bronx, New York. Individual scores were 25-18, 25-8, and 25-22. The Lightning (12-17, 6-3 CUNYAC) advanced to Friday’s semifinal vs. top-seeded Baruch College, while CSI saw the close of its season with a 12-16 overall record (5-4 CUNYAC).
CSI suffered from a host miscues and errors in its loss, coupled with a stifling Lightning attack that scattered a total of 37 kills on a .250 attack percentage. While CSI battled for quality attack chances, Lehman commanded the match from the service line, connecting on a staggering 17 service aces.
The aces were the focus in the opening game, as Lehman posted 9 aces, with five alone coming in a row from freshman Gerri-Ann Martin. Martin would finish with six aces for the match, while Ashley Meany posted five. CSI posted just 16 attacks in the opener, as Lehman used a significant mid-game run to keep CSI at bay for most of the way.

CSI fell to Lehman in four contests, 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, during the regular season in early September. With a packed season of competitive games after that, the Dolphins believe they are ready for the Lightning. “I think the team was ready as soon as they dropped the match to them during the season,” said assistant coach Melissa Quiles, “They know what they have to do to win and they’ve shown that they really want the victory.”

Lehman finished the regular season with an 11-17 overall record and 6-3 in the CUNYAC. The Dolphins completed with a 12-15 overall record and 5-4 CUNYAC record.

“It’s a rival back and forth for the past few years,” explains Quiles, “Lehman is a good team. It could be anyone’s game. We always tell the team, it’s not so much who you play, its how you play on the day you play.”

DOLPHINS DROP FINALE TO CCNY; PLAYOFFS NEXT

The College of Staten Island women’s volleyball squad dropped a straight-set match tonight to the City College of New York in both teams’ CUNYAC regular season finale played at the Sports & Recreation Center. Individual scores were 25-13, 25-19, and 25-13. The win insured at least a tie for first place in the CUNYAC standings for CCNY at 8-1 (20-9 overall), while CSI fell to 5-4 in CUNYAC play (12-15 overall), and have earned the No. 5 seeding in the upcoming CUNYAC Postseason Championship Tournament. CSI will travel to Lehman College on Tuesday, November 3 for quarterfinal action.
Despite the final score, the Dolphins played admirably against the Beavers on their Senior Night, posting leads midway through each game, before late runs by CCNY capped each game.
In the opener, CSI and CCNY kept exchanging the lead. A 9-1 run by CCNY made it 9-4, but then CSI came back to tie the score at 9-9 on a nice service stretch by Fiosa Begai. From there, however, CCNY got on track on a couple of services by Floriana Garo and CCNY never looked back.

ROADRUNNERS RACE PAST CSI, 3-0

Ramapo College used a balanced attack and aggressive gameplay to take a 3-0 win over the College of Staten Island in women’s volleyball in a non-conference affair played at the Sports & Recreation Center earlier this evening. After exchanging a series of leads in the early going of game one, Ramapo used a seven-point streak to take over game one by a score of 13-7. From there, the Roadrunners were able to keep CSI guessing with timely sets and improbable digs. CSI was out-killed in the frame, 12-3, en route to the 25-12 final.
