Majoring in Finance, Hession holds a 3.489 grade point average. The sophomore sees a future in law school and would like to become a corporate lawyer.

As for his success on the field, the Staten Island Tech High School product has been a vital part of the Dolphins line up. On May 1st, Hession’s two-run double in the 7th inning extended the lead to help the Dolphins to a 14-8 victory in the CUNYAC title win over Baruch. With just four games in the month of May, the centerfielder totaled 13 at bats that included four hits, three RBI, three walks and a batting average of .308.

Closing the 2010 season, Hession finds himself amongst CSI’s all-time ranked players. As a sophomore he is ranked 11th in career records with a .443 on base percentage while ranking 13th in career records with .360 batting average. He also stands at the 12th spot in single season records for the year 2010 with 17 stolen bases.

STRIKE THREE: CSI BAGS TRIO OF ECAC METRO HONORS

The hits keep on coming for the College of Staten Island men’s baseball squad. On the heels of its finest season in history and a berth into the ECAC Metro NY/NJ Tournament, three Dolphins were tabbed with ECAC honors, announced this afternoon. Second year Head Coach Michael Mauro, coming off back-to-back CUNYAC Coach of the Year honors bagged the Coach of the Year honor by the ECAC Metro division as well, as pupils Pat Gale and Devon DiCasoli were also honored, placed on the ECAC Metro First-Team All-Star roster.
Mauro, who took over skipper duties in 2009 after an one-year stint as an assistant, compiled a 19-20 record in his first season with a roster comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomore players. The coach parlayed the rookie season into an outstanding 2010, as the team improved to a 31-11 showing, complete with a CUNYAC crown, ECAC postseason berth, and a No. 6 regional ranking by the NCAA in their final poll. The Dolphins posted program records in 2010 for wins (31), hits (528), doubles (105), fielding percentage (.958), and strikeouts thrown (319).
As good as the coaching was the play of both Gale and DiCasoli anchored a lethal attack, both at the plate and on the hill. Gale, an ABCA All-American batted a lethal .418, scattering a team-high 69 hits, 47 RBI, five triples, and a school record eight sacrifice flies. The junior was just as deadly on the mound, amassing an 8-2 record with a 2.06 ERA. The southpaw mustered a single season school record 108 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched, putting him in the NCAA’s top five in K’s per nine innings of work.

PAT GALE NAMED ABCA/RAWLINGS ALL-AMERICAN

It’s been a pretty memorable 2010 for CSI hurler Pat Gale. The junior put a pretty large punctuation mark on an outstanding season by being named today to the American Baseball Coaches Association / Rawlings All-America First-Team, the first CSI baseball player to accomplish the feat, and one of the top honors to be bestowed on an NCAA baseball player. The heavy accomplishment is another feather in the cap of a CSI program that hammered down it’s 14th CUNYAC Championship in its 33-year history. Gale joined 13 other honorees on the First-Team that comprised a total of 10 teams. Gale was one of only seven players who made the first team as a non-senior, as he will return for his final effort in 2011.
The latest honor for the southpaw Gale, who earned an 8-2 record with a 2.09 ERA in 77+ innings, is an accentuation to other notable achievements thrown his way. Within a span of only a few weeks Gale was named the CUNY Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year, and on the heels of winning the CSI Athletics Male Athlete of the Year award, Gale earned First-Team All-Region honors from the ABCA/Rawlings and a D3Baseball.com All-American Honorable Mention.

TRIO OF DOLPHINS TAB ABCA BASEBALL HONORS

The American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings made their selections for all-region honors yesterday, and among them were three Dolphins representing the first, second and third team. Junior pitcher Pat Gale was CSI’s representative on the first-team, while senior infielder Devon DiCasoli was honored on the second team. Sophomore outfielder Joe Cassano came in on the third-team.
Pat Gale is wrapping up a super season with this ABCA honor, and is currently in the running for All-America honors as well. The junior lefty was named CUNYAC Player of the Year and took home CSI’s Male Athlete of the Year last Friday. The ace of the CSI staff went 8-2 this season, setting single season CSI record in wins, innings tossed, and strikeouts. He also finished in the top five nationally in strikeouts per nine innings. Although the ABCA honor is given to him based on his work on the mound, Gale’s numbers at the dish were just as impressive, as he hit .418 this season with a team best 69 hits, 47 RBI, and five triples.

OSPREYS PUT END TO CSI'S ECAC BASEBALL PLAYOFF RUN

The College of Staten Island saw a quick end to its ECAC Metro NY/NJ Metro Tournament postseason run, as the No. 3 seeded Dolphins dropped a 5-1 decision at the hands of No. 6 Richard Stockton College as part of quarterfinal play at the CSI Baseball Complex earlier this evening. The loss dips the Dolphins down to a season-ending 31-11 mark, while the Ospreys improved to 20-19, and will take on No. 7 Rutgers-Camden in semifinal play Saturday.
The tough loss for CSI came after the Dolphins opened a 1-0 lead in the game’s first inning. Off of Stockton starter Bryan Frank, the Dolphins started the first inning with Devon DiCasoli getting on via a walk and Thomas DeWaters earning on due to a catcher’s interference. CSI starting pitcher Pat Gale then helped his own cause, stroking a single to right field, plating DiCasoli for the early tally. Unfortunately, the Dolphins would leave runners at second and third base to end the inning, and wouldn’t strand another until the game’s fifth inning.
By then, the Ospreys would open up a 3-1 lead catapulted by a trio of runs in the game’s fourth inning. Still off of Gale, a Mike Wasco double to the gap in left-centerfield plated two runs, and the sophomore would then come around to score via Joe Farrell’s suicide squeeze play, giving the visitors the 3-1 cushion.

ECAC TOURNAMENT GAMES POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER

With the sight of rain all day both Dolphins Baseball and Softball ECAC Metro NY/NJ Postseason Tournament games will be postponed until tomorrow, Thursday, May 13th same time for both games.

What’s more is that CSI will host opening quarterfinal games on Wednesday, May 12. The CSI men (31-10) received the field’s No. 3 seed. The Dolphins women (24-16), meanwhile, have earned the No. 4 seed in the eight-team field that kicks off on the same day.
Still in the hunt for a NCAA Division III National Tournament berth, the CSI men’s baseball unit can make a quality statement in that push for an at-large bid with a strong showing in the ECAC tournament, which is a straight-up, single-elimination tourney.
The Dolphins will be pitted against No. 6 Richard Stockton College (19-19). Start time will be 6:00pm at the CSI Baseball Complex. Should CSI advance, they would play the winner of No. 2 Rutgers-Newark (22-20) vs. No. 7 Rutgers-Camden (20-18) on Saturday, May 15. The other quarterfinal games pit No.1 FDU-Florham (31-10) against No. 8 Ramapo College (19-17), and No. 4 Stevens Tech (20-18) against No. 5 SUNY-Old Westbury (22-21). The Championship game will be played on Sunday, May 16, at the highest remaining seed with a time yet to be determined.

DOLPHINS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON POWERING OVER YESHIVA

The College of Staten Island men’s baseball team officially closed their 2010 regular season with a lop-sided win over visiting Yeshiva University in a single, non-conference affair, 20-2. The Dolphins improved their impressive mark to an overall record of 31-10, improving on their highest win total in CSI single season history. The Dolphins hope that their closer at home against Yeshiva is merely a tune-up for the upcoming postseason, as from here the Dolphins will await word on possible tournament berths into the ECAC Metro NY/NJ and NCAA Division III National Baseball Tournament.
Everyone came to the party in the heavy-handed win over the Maccabees, as the Dolphins used 20 players in the contest, including eight pitchers. CSI starter Pat Gale had plenty of run support to work with, as the Dolphins raced out to a 9-0 lead after just three innings. Gale and fellow starter Paul Ciccazzo each pitched two frames, while relievers Richard Anderson, James Mardikos, Joe Jacobson, and Anthony Collucci each added one inning of work.
In a neat twist, CSI sent utility player and senior Devon DiCasoli to the hill to start the ninth inning with CSI up by the 20-2 cushion. DiCasoli only faced one batter, recording an out and becoming the first CSI player in memory to play all nine positions in the field during a career.

HOST OF CUNYAC HONORS DECORATE CSI BASEBALL

The College of Staten Island men’s baseball team celebrated its 14th CUNYAC Championship this past weekend, and right alongside that, the naming of 11 individuals for postseason awards. Among the lot of decorated diamond-goers was yearly award honorees Pat Gale and second year Head Coach Michael Mauro who took Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, and sophomore pitcher Paul Ciccazzo, who earned Pitcher of the Year Honors. Six more Dolphins were named to the All-CUNYAC First-Team, while two others earned Second-Team All-Star honors.
Leading the charge this season has been the dynamic play of Gale, who will be nominated for national All-American honors as well. The junior is putting the finishing touches on his most successful season, playing a majority of his time on the mound and at first base. Gale currently sports an 8-1 win-loss record with an even 2.00 ERA. In 67.2 innings pitched, he has registered 92 strikeouts, a CSI single season record. Opponents are batting a paltry .182 against the lefthander.
Equal to his performance on the mound is his electric bat at the dish. Gale is second on the squad with a blistering .420 batting average, slicing off 15 extra base hits (10 doubles, five triples), posting a team-best 42 RBI and 20 walks. The junior has also stolen five bags and sports a .984 fielding percentage in the field.
