The College of Staten Island women’s soccer team worked hard to get the equalizing goal, but then gave up another after just 27 seconds, to suffer a 2-1 loss at the hands of visiting Purchase State College in a non-conference affair held at the CSI Soccer Complex. The loss dipped the Dolphins to 2-4-1 overall while the Panthers upped their record to 3-3-1.
Outshooting the Dolphins, 7-2 in the first stanza (3-2 on goal), Purchase State got on the board in the 26th minute, as a Sarah Lichy pass found Abigal Katz all alone on a breakaway, and Katz buried a shot passed CSI goalie Lisa Radano to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. That was the way the score would stay until intermission, as both goalies made a pair of saves in the half to keep it close.
Action intensified in the second half, and even though the Panthers ended up out-shooting the Dolphins, 8-1, on goal in the second frame, it was CSI that got on the board. Kelly Kenny found an open Lauren Neglia who slipped the ball passed keeper Shea Macagnone to knot the score at 1-1 at the 71:32 mark. But no sooner did the ball get put back at midfield did the Panthers respond. Ashley Panepinto gathered up a loose ball outside the offensive box just 27 seconds later and laced a missile passed Radano to give Purchase State the lead immediate back, 2-1.
From there, the Panthers retreated back to protect the lead and it was enough to hold onto victory.
PSC outshot the Dolphins for the game 17-3 (11-3 on goal), and Purchase enjoyed a 4-1 edge in corner kicks as well. The virtually clean game featured no bookings and only a total of 7 fouls. Radano suffered the loss for CSI despite making six saves.
CSI will be back on the pitch on Saturday, October 3. The team will travel to face Medgar Evers College at Aviator Field at 12pm.
