RUTGERS-NEWARK POWERS PAST CSI, 7-0
The College of Staten Island men's soccer team fell for the second straight time, being blanked by Rutgers-Newark on the road in a non-conference test, 7-0, last night. With the loss, CSI fell to 3-11 overall, while the Scarlet Raiders advanced to 6-3-3. Senior Marin Gjoca, juniors Christien Vlahinich and Jeff Vazqeuz, sophomores Tom King, Richie Villamar and Mike Trenard, and freshman Jervis Witherspoon each netted goals as Rutgers-Newark dominated play. Vlahinich, Gjoca, Villamar, Trenard and Vazquez each added an assist as the Raiders equaled their top goal output of the season. Rutgers-Newark outshot the Dolphins, 37-4, building up a startling 20-0 edge in shots on goal. Vlahinich and Witherspoon goals gave Rutgers-Newark a 2-0 halftime edge before the dam broke in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Lindberg picked up the win in goal without having to make a save in the opening half before rookie Domenico Martirano went the second half to complete the Raiders’ seventh shutout of the season. Lindberg, the backup goalkeeper, is now 2-0 on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Brown made six of his 13 saves in the opening period to keep things close, but the volume of Raider opportunities finally broke open the contest. Rutgers-Newark used 24 players while the Dolphins had just 12 players dressed for the match. - Story courtesy of Rutgers-Newark Sports Information |
