BASEBALL DROPS A PAIR TO PSU-BERKS, 4-2 & 10-3

Myrtle Beach, SC | The College of Staten Island baseball squad was back on the diamond on Sunday for a pair of games, and this time the results were not as favorable as they were on opening day, as CSI dropped a pair to the Lions of Penn State - Berks, 4-2 and 10-3.  The losses dipped CSI to a season-opening 2-2, while PSU improved to a season-opening 2-0.

After a pair of scoreless frames in the opener, PSU got on the board when Toby Welk hit a two-run homerun over CSI starter Thomas Musso in the game's third inning, and then the inning continued long enough to see Damian Mace triple in Mason Pennypacker to make it 3-0.  PSU added another digit in the fourth to make it 4-0 before CSI mounted a comeback.

In the fifth, Anthony DiMarco singled, and was pulled for Anthony Lozada on the base paths.  Lozada advanced to second when Nicholas Meola was walked, and then to third on a Frank Muzzio fly out.  The Dolphins then executed a successful double-steal, as Lozada came in from third when Meola took off to second base.  PSU was able to escape the rest of the inning unscathed, but CSI pushed across another run in the sixth, when Jett Nouvertne singled in Jordan Wilson who earned on via a fielder's choice and was moved to second via an error.  Despite a Meola double top lead off the top of the seventh, the Dolphins went down in order from there to fall in the opener, 4-2.

Musso took the loss for CSI, going 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walking five.  Terrance Mulligan came on for 2.1 of solid relief, allowing only a pair of hits.  Tyler Comport scored the win, pitching six innings, allowing only one earned on four hits.  Justin Butler earned the one-inning save.

The Dolphins started the second game of the doubleheader terrifically, scoring three runs in the game's first frame, chasing PSU starter Drew Skrocki.  All three runs were scored via bases-loaded walks issued to Sean Becker, Joseph Amato, and Scott Fodor.  CSI starter Chris Karnbach, meanwhile, was rolling along until the fourth inning, when he was touched up for a run via a double steal executed by the Lions.  In the fifth inning, PSU was able to tie via a two-run homer by Welk.

Things went south from there for the Dolphins, as PSU pushed across five runs to get out to an 8-3 lead, helped along by two bases-loaded walks and a CSI error in the field.  Brandon Griesemer doubled in a pair of runs in the seventh for emphasis against CSI reliever James Taunton to help give the Lions a 10-3 final win.

Jon Davis got the win for PSU, pitching a sterling 6.1 innings of relief, yielding no runs on just two hits, fanning six.  Karnbach took the loss.

CSI will wrap up their six game swing in Myrtle Beach with a doubleheader on Monday at 12 Noon against the University of Valley Forge.
