SWEENEY & VILLA SWEEP WEEKLY HONORS; ESCOBEDO WINS ON WOMEN'S SIDE

The College of Staten Island men's and women's swimming and diving programs only had a single match a week ago, but the convincing wins were enough to propel the Dolphins to three weekly awards.  CSI swept the men's side of the pool as freshmen Tim Sweeney won Player of the Week honors while Derek Villa won Rookie of the Week.  On the women's side, newcomer Samantha Escobedo has made a healthy splash, taking home her first Rookie of the Week honor as well.

CSI won their events against Lehman College, 127-117, and York College by a 156-47 count, and with it, clinched the CUNYAC Regular Season Championship by virtue of their 4-0 conference record.  Sweeney was one of the more dynamic stars, taking three individual first-place finishes in three unique strokes against York after grabbing two individual gold's against Lehman.

First against the Lightning, Sweeney only participated in two individual events, both the Freestyle (1,000 and 200-yard) and won both, adding a silver finish in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay at the meet's conclusion.  Then, in Friday's meet, Sweeney registered gold in the 50-yard Freestyle with a race time of 23.42.  Three events later, Sweeney was tops again in the 100-yard Butterfly, coming in at 56.92, winning the event by more than 12 seconds.  To end his night, Sweeney scored gold again in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.56, besting five other swimmers in the event by almost three full seconds.

A fellow St. Peter's High School grad, Derek Villa enjoyed a terrific week in the pool last week as well.  Villa scored a third place faring in the 50-yard Freestyle against Lehman, and then placed third again in the 500-yard installment later in the meet.  Villa then was a part of Sweeney's relay team at the end of the meet, gaining a second place finish.  Against York, Villa started by taking the 200-yard Freestyle event with a time of 2:01.47, and followed up later with a first-place run in the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 54.29, over eight seconds better than the rest of the pack.  Finally, Villa was a part of CSI's triumph in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, joining teammates Danila Novikov, Nolan Reese and Mitchell Lovell with a time of 1:39.53.

The CSI women were just as impressive last week, also scoring a pair of lop-sided wins against Lehman and York.  Escobedo made her debut last week and it was a good one.  Against Lehman, Escobedo started in the very first race, the 200-yard Medley Relay, scoring her team a first place finish.  Later on, she scored her first ever individual first-place finish in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:36.29 before following up with another first-place finish in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:08.83.  Escobedo hit gold three more times against York, first in the 50-yard Freestyle, then the 100-yard Freestyle and then as part of the 200-yard Freestyle Relay.
