Just a handful of weeks after being named the CUNYAC Player of the Year, College of Staten Island women's soccer senior captain
Demi-Jean Martorano captured yet another award, being named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-East Regional Team. Martorano earned third team honors, joining eight other forwards from the East region. She is only the second NSCAA award winner in program history, joining junior
Melissa Gelardi who earned on a year ago after her super season in 2012.
"I am very excited to hear this news," said Martorano. "I am very honored because it is a great accomplishment to have gotten this kind of recognition from coaches at the national level. I am very proud to have earned this."
Martorano, a Psychology major at CSI, put the finishing touches on an immaculate season, posting a team high 26 goals, tied for the most in a single season in CSI history. The senior also placed fourth on the squad with five assists, good for a team best 57 total points to go with a team-high 123 shots. Her six game-winners also led the squad, leaving her with a total of 25 in her career, a CSI all-time record.
"Demi-Jean has deserved all the success she has had," said CSI skipper John Guagliardo, who led the team to a program-best 16-3-2 overall record en route to its fourth ECAC postseason appearance. "She is an incredibly gifted athlete who works extremely hard and I am confident her soccer career will continue."
Indeed, Martorano is positioning herself for a possible soccer career beyond college, possibly internationally. Her 85 career goals are a CSI and CUNYAC record, as are her 202 total points. Her 362 total shots are also a career best at CSI. Martorano cruised to the conference's Player of the Year honor at season's end, the second of her career. She also scored the only two postseason goals this season for the Dolphins, one that included a narrow, 2-1, loss to St. Joseph's College (LI) in ECAC play. Slated for graduation in 2014, she hopes to dovetail her playing career with a career in sports psychology.
