Dolphins Basketball Opens Conference Play At York College

STATEN ISLAND, NY – It's time for the men's and women's basketball teams to face some familiar competition as they open the CUNYAC conference season tomorrow night when they travel to York College for a doubleheader.

The College of Staten Island women's basketball team will face their first conference opponent for the 2013-2014 CUNY opener Tuesday, Nov. 26th, at 6:00pm at York College. York College has been a lucky location with the advantage in favor of the Dolphins capturing a five game winning streak against the Cardinals. The overall statistics are evidence of the Dolphins favor at York College as well, with the numbers standing at 23 wins to 5 losses. The last time the Dolphins lost to York College was dated back to December 2, 2010. The Dolphins fell to the Cardinals 59-64. However, their last match against York tells a whole different story.

The Dolphins took a 76-48 win over York College as part of CUNYAC play in the 2012-2013 season. The Dolphins took full control in that game with a 15-1 run in the first half that saw CSI take a 31-18 lead at 2:48. York was not able to make a comeback against the Dolphins, shutting down any attempt the Cardinals had with a well-tempo upbeat playing style. CSI was led by Tierno's 18 points and six rebounds, while Johnson posted 12 markers and four assists. York was led by Ishonda McFarland's 12 points.

The Women's Basketball Team currently stands at an impressive 3-1 record and only sees more wins in their future. Judging from their 55-7 overall wins against York College, they hope to add another victory to their record.

On the men's side, CSI men's team will also open their conference season after the women on Tuesday, at 8:00pm at York College. The men share the same favored fate as the women's team in delivering a four-game winning streak based on program history. The last time the Dolphins lost was at home on February 7, 2011, falling to the Cardinals 58-70. Overall, the Dolphins have succeeded in more wins over losses with a program 56-22 record over the Cardinals. Both the home and away statistics against York College show a 25-10 record, still to the Dolphins advantage.

The last game played during the 2012-2013 season boasted a 75-66 win in favor of the Dolphins. Bloochy Magloire's 28 points helped power CSI past York, 75-66. York never had the lead on the Dolphins, but engaged in trading baskets back and forth. After the second half, the Dolphins captured several runs giving them a comfortable lead and the eventual win against York.

CSI shot 47.2% from the field, and were led by Magloire's 28-point effort.  The junior added a team high four assists, while both Chadwick-Myers and Dylan Bulger added 18 points apiece.  York was led by Vails' monster 31-point game, adding three assists.  CSI out-rebounded York, 36-30.

The current 2013-2014 record for the Dolphins is 1-2. Although the men are getting off to a rocky start, they plan on changing directions and soaring to the top.
