With the first couple of weeks of the season in the books, the College of Staten Island men's swimming and diving season is off to a great start, and the program was rewarded handsomely with the naming of two athletes to weekly honors. Returning star
Yury Zimarev locked up the conference's Performer of the Week honors, while freshman Tim Sweeney bagged the CUNYAC's Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced yesterday.
In three meets this season so far, Zimarev, a Moscow native, took first in all of the events he competed in. In the Dolphins' meet against Old Westbury and Brooklyn, the senior had three first place finishes in the following events: 200 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, and the 200 yard freestyle relay with times of 2.07:65, 53.72, and 1:37.54. During CSI's meet against conference opponent Baruch College, Zimarev continued to shine with three first place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, and the 200 yard freestyle relay with times of 22.39, 53.80, and 1:32.39. The fourth year swimmer has propelled the Dolphins to an incredible 3-0 start on their season.
Sweeney has also impressed with a torrid career start. The first year swimmer had an outstanding start to his collegiate swimming career with a first place and two second place finishes in CSI's meet against Old Westbury and Brooklyn. The Staten Island native finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.43, first in the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:12.20, and second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.32. In the Dolphins following meet against Baruch, Sweeney dominated the field with first place finishes in all three events he participated in. The freshman swam in the 200 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, and the 200 yard relay, finishing with the times of 1:50.42, 4:58.71, and 1:32.39. The St. Peter's alum is expected to be a vital part to the CSI puzzle all year long.
CSI is back in action on Tuesday, November 19, hosting Brooklyn College at 6pm at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center.
