For the first time in school history the College of Staten Island's intramural program entered a Intramural dodgeball team into the 7th Annual Northeast Regional Dodgeball Tournament at Rutgers University Busch Campus. The "Dolphins" as they were named, fell just short of making it to the playoffs due to game differential. The Dolphins finished the day with a record of 1-2 in match play (best two out of three games) and 4-5 in total games played.
The first match put the Dolphins to the test early as they faced off against Delaware State University's "Hit Men." Dressed all in black, the Hit Men threw hard early and took the first game, however, the Dolphins used that as motivation and won the next game with efficient catches and smart throws. The third game lasted over two minutes as both teams traded players in and out until the Hit Men pegged a few Dolphins in a row to give them the advantage and eventually pull the win out, losing their first match 2-1.
The Dolphins next match was against Towson State University's "The This Gamers." The Dolphins came out strong to start the first game with great dodges and solid throws but they lost the game as the Gamers used a two-on-one advantage to pick up a game one win. The Dolphins, now with fire in their eyes, picked up the win for game two due the only player left for The This Gamers stepped on the boundary line while attempting to throw the ball. With confidence excelling, the Dolphins stormed passed The This Gamers with precise throws and team-saving catches to win the third game and win the match, 2-1.
The last match for the Dolphins, in their pool play round, saw them take on the undefeated "Ball Masters" of Bloomsburg College. In an intense first game the Dolphins played aggressive and smart as a team and handed the Ball Masters their first game loss. Although their confidence was high, the Dolphins came up short as the Ball Masters took advantage of a six to one player lead to grab the game two win. Tied at one game apiece, game three started with multiples dodges on each side before a player was hit and called out. Although, the Dolphins battled hard for over two minutes, in the end it was two Ball Masters players left to The Dolphins one player left that ended the Dolphins journey into the playoffs.
CSI Intramural Director Marguerite Moran and CSI Intramural Assistants Ednita Lorenzo and
Sal Caruso helped put the team together. Caruso coached the team on its trip to Rutgers, the first in school history. Next year could be a different story but in all this Dolphin team did the College of Staten Island proud by having fun to go along with great teamwork, work ethic and a great sportsmanship attitude.
