The American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings made their selections for all-region honors yesterday, and among them were three Dolphins representing the first, second and third team. Junior pitcher Pat Gale was CSI’s representative on the first-team, while senior infielder Devon DiCasoli was honored on the second team. Sophomore outfielder Joe Cassano came in on the third-team.
Pat Gale is wrapping up a super season with this ABCA honor, and is currently in the running for All-America honors as well. The junior lefty was named CUNYAC Player of the Year and took home CSI’s Male Athlete of the Year last Friday. The ace of the CSI staff went 8-2 this season, setting single season CSI record in wins, innings tossed, and strikeouts. He also finished in the top five nationally in strikeouts per nine innings. Although the ABCA honor is given to him based on his work on the mound, Gale’s numbers at the dish were just as impressive, as he hit .418 this season with a team best 69 hits, 47 RBI, and five triples.
Devon DiCasoli put the finishing touches on his career with an impeccable senior campaign. The utility man saw time at virtually every position in 2010, batting a team-best .425, the 14th highest average in CSI single season history. He also bagged the career record for stolen bases with 64, registering 24 this season. The senior also boasted 65 hits, 13 for extra bases, slugging .529. The solid glove in the field also tabbed a .961 fielding percentage in 129 chances. The citing by the ABCA is the first for DiCasoli, who was a first-team CUNYAC All-Star.
Rounding out the honors was Joe Cassano, a sophomore making his debut with the Dolphins in 2010. He enjoyed a sensational opening year, batting .351 while starting 40 games for CSI. Boasting a team-best 15 doubles, adding a pair of triples and homers as well, Cassano slugged .520. Cassano sported a .947 fielding percentage, grounded in left field for most of the season.
CSI finished 31-11 this season, winning their 14th CUNYAC Championship before earning a berth into the ECAC Metro NY/NJ Postseason Tournament. The 31 wins were the best in program history.
