DAY 1 COMPLETE AT THE CUNYAC SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

After Day 1 of the CUNY Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the College of Staten Island stands in good shape.
 
In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay event, Pavel Buyanov, Mohamed Hikal, Vladislav Romanov and Nikolay Shevchenko finished in second with a time of 1:29.38.
 
Joe Lee finished second with a time of 5:04.67 in the 500 Yard Freestyle.
 
Vlad Romanov earned gold for CSI by winning the men's 200 Yard IM in 1:57.21.
 
In the 1 meter dive, Antonio Gaspar won silver with a score of 244.50.
 
In the Men's 50 Yard freestyle, Kenny Kim of Baruch set a championship record with a time of 21.73. Pavel Buyanov won silver with a 21.88 time.
 
In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of April Bartlett, Patricia Crea, Tara Meiners and Svetlana Oleynik finished in third with a time of 1:32.60.
 
For the second year in a row, the College of Staten Island swept all three medals in the women's three-meter diving competition. Freshman April Bartlett earned gold with a cumulative score of 309.65, while 2009 gold medal winner Patricia Crea won silver with a 261.00. Kelly Kenny won bronze with a 254.80.
 
"I was just thinking about the dives," Bartlett said afterwards. "It's a great feeling to know that we gave our team points right from the start of the meet." The nursing major from Staten Island did not dive for her high school, but has been a member Great Kills Swim Club for most of her life.
 
The 11th Annual CUNY Athletic Conference men's and women's swimming and diving championships resume at the APEX on Friday, February 5th at 1:30pm and conclude on Saturday, February 6th at 9:00am.

Vladislav Romanov
Men's Swimming
Vlad Romanov of the men’s swimming team has been named College of Staten Island’s Male Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
He began the month at the ECAC DIII Open. After two days of events, Romanov took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay alongside teammates Timur Rakihimov, Yury Zimarev and Danila Novikov with a 1:32.77 finish that was a NCAA B Cut qualifier.
His 1:49.97 200 Yard Backstroke time was also good enough for first place.  
Romanov completed the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 51.02 which was a new CSI record and new ECAC Record. It also qualified him for the NCAA’s.
 
In the 200 IM, he took 3rd place, finishing at 1:53.85, his personal best and an NCAA B Cut. In the 200 Freestyle Relay with Rakihimov, Zimarev and Novikov they took 2nd place touching in at 1:27.73. Finally in the 400 Medley Relay, the same foursome took first place, touching at 3:23.73 which was also an NCAA B Cut qualifier and a new ECAC record.
 
In the meet vs. Brooklyn College, he took three first place wins.
Nikki Fabozzi
Women's Basketball
Nikki Fabozzi of women’s basketball has been named College of Staten Island’s Female Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
Fabozzi led CSI with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in their first conference win of the season over York. In CSI’s four games in December, Fabozzi has averaged 13 points, totaled 18 rebounds and grabbed 9 steals.
 
The 5-9 guard is the 2nd best rounder on the team totaling 48 rebounds thus far this season. Starting in 9 of the 10 games she’s played in, she leads the team in steals with 29 and averages 10.8 points per game.
