WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS WITH WIN OVER YORK

Kristen Panariello led the Dolphins with 18 points.
The # 4 College of Staten Island took a 68-54 victory over the # 5 York College Cardinals in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Basketball Championships.
 
The Dolphins will advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday, February 24th at 5:30 pm at the Nat Holman Gym at CCNY against #1 Baruch College. Baruch defeated # 8 Medgar Evers, 66-46, this afternoon.
 
The Cardinals took off strong with two four point leads with seven minutes expired from the clock. From there, however, the Dolphins took the reigns for the rest of the game. Allowing York to score just 8 points in the last 14 minutes of the half, CSI scored 28 points including 12 from Kristen Panariello and nine from Denise Zajonc, to finish the half up 35-19.
 
Just a minute into the second half, the Dolphins would take the greatest lead of the game with 19 points behind a Katelyn Hepworth made free throw and Danielle McLaughlin three point goal. At 15:10, the Cardinals began an 11-3 run that would close the gap to 11 points at 9:18. From there the team’s went basket for basket until a 5-0 run by York with four minutes left cut the deficit to ten points. The Cardinals would stop their scoring there and CSI’s Mallory Ameneiros would hit four free throws in the final 1:17 to finish the game up by fourteen.
 
The Dolphins shot 70.4% from free throw range. CSI outrebounded York 68-54.
 
Panariello led the Dolphins with 18 points while Ameneiros talled 15 points with 8 assists. Zajonc tallied 13 points and seven rebounds while CUNYAC’s Rookie of the Year Hepworth had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
 
For the Cardinals, Maimouna Dabo led with 18 points and five assists while Kadisha Wickham led all players with 17 rebounds and tallied 14 points.
 
Tickets the 2010 CUNYAC/ Con Edison Championship semi-finals are free however you need a ticket to enter. Tickets can be picked up in the CSI Athletic Office in the Sports and Recreation Center.

Vladislav Romanov
Men's Swimming
Vlad Romanov of the men’s swimming team has been named College of Staten Island’s Male Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
He began the month at the ECAC DIII Open. After two days of events, Romanov took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay alongside teammates Timur Rakihimov, Yury Zimarev and Danila Novikov with a 1:32.77 finish that was a NCAA B Cut qualifier.
His 1:49.97 200 Yard Backstroke time was also good enough for first place.  
Romanov completed the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 51.02 which was a new CSI record and new ECAC Record. It also qualified him for the NCAA’s.
 
In the 200 IM, he took 3rd place, finishing at 1:53.85, his personal best and an NCAA B Cut. In the 200 Freestyle Relay with Rakihimov, Zimarev and Novikov they took 2nd place touching in at 1:27.73. Finally in the 400 Medley Relay, the same foursome took first place, touching at 3:23.73 which was also an NCAA B Cut qualifier and a new ECAC record.
 
In the meet vs. Brooklyn College, he took three first place wins.
Nikki Fabozzi
Women's Basketball
Nikki Fabozzi of women’s basketball has been named College of Staten Island’s Female Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
Fabozzi led CSI with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in their first conference win of the season over York. In CSI’s four games in December, Fabozzi has averaged 13 points, totaled 18 rebounds and grabbed 9 steals.
 
The 5-9 guard is the 2nd best rounder on the team totaling 48 rebounds thus far this season. Starting in 9 of the 10 games she’s played in, she leads the team in steals with 29 and averages 10.8 points per game.
