DOLPHINS FINISH SEASON 12-14 WITH LOSS TO BARUCH IN QUARTERFINALS

The third-seeded Baruch Bearcats took a 94-76 victory over the sixth-seeded College of Staten Island in the CUNYAC quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon in the ARC Arena. CSI finished their season with a 12-14 overall record while Baruch extends to 19-6 overall and advances to the semifinals on Tuesday. With the victory, the Bearcats advance to the semifinal round on Tuesday night at CCNY’s Nat Holman Gymnasium for a 7:30 pm contest against the second-seeded Bulldogs of Brooklyn College. Brooklyn defeated Lehman in their home quarterfinal this afternoon by the score of 96-68.

The Dolphins took an early 5-3 lead on a basket by Christian Montervino, but the Bearcats scored the next 11 points for a 14-5 advantage. CSI would rally to cut the deficit to just two points (24-22) on a pair of free throws by Michael Ledbetter with 7:24 left in the opening half, but the Bearcats took control again with a 25-14 run to take the 49-36 lead into the intermission.

During the second half, Baruch continued to control the action behind 18 second half points by Sean Loftus for a 70-50 lead midway through the second half. The visiting Dolphins made a late run to cut the lead to 11 points (83-72) with 3:05 left, but Baruch responded again by scoring the next nine points to help seal their second consecutive home quarterfinal victory against the Dolphins.

Overall, Baruch dominated the boards this afternoon with a 47-32 rebounding advantage and shot 48 percent (31-64) for the playoff victory.

Loftus dominated for Baruch with a career-high 33 points.
Lionel Hilairehad 20 points, six rebounds and Chris Beauchamp had 10 points with 10 rebounds to round out the double-figure scorers for Baruch.

Jordan Young led Staten Island with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Ledbetter finished with 15 points and five rebounds. In their last game as Dolphins, Ryan Hennessey tallied 13 points and Montervino added 12 points with a team-high 9 rebounds.
 
Hennessey became the 26th CSI male player to hit 1,000 and completes his CSI career ranked 20th with 1,141 points. A few games later, Montervino became the 27th player to hit the CSI milestone and he finishes his career right behind Hennessey ranking 21st with 1,126 points.

Nikki Fabozzi
Women's Basketball
Nikki Fabozzi of women’s basketball has been named College of Staten Island’s Female Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
Fabozzi led CSI with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in their first conference win of the season over York. In CSI’s four games in December, Fabozzi has averaged 13 points, totaled 18 rebounds and grabbed 9 steals.
 
The 5-9 guard is the 2nd best rounder on the team totaling 48 rebounds thus far this season. Starting in 9 of the 10 games she’s played in, she leads the team in steals with 29 and averages 10.8 points per game.
 
Vladislav Romanov
Men's Swimming
Vlad Romanov of the men’s swimming team has been named College of Staten Island’s Male Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
He began the month at the ECAC DIII Open. After two days of events, Romanov took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay alongside teammates Timur Rakihimov, Yury Zimarev and Danila Novikov with a 1:32.77 finish that was a NCAA B Cut qualifier.
His 1:49.97 200 Yard Backstroke time was also good enough for first place.  
Romanov completed the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 51.02 which was a new CSI record and new ECAC Record. It also qualified him for the NCAA’s.
 
In the 200 IM, he took 3rd place, finishing at 1:53.85, his personal best and an NCAA B Cut. In the 200 Freestyle Relay with Rakihimov, Zimarev and Novikov they took 2nd place touching in at 1:27.73. Finally in the 400 Medley Relay, the same foursome took first place, touching at 3:23.73 which was also an NCAA B Cut qualifier and a new ECAC record.
 
In the meet vs. Brooklyn College, he took three first place wins.
