CSI’s Katelyn Hepworth took home CUNYAC Co-Rookie of the Year honors while Kristen Panariello and Jordan Young took 2nd-team All-Star honors as the CUNYAC announced its all-stars before a packed house at the Water Club Restaurant in Manhattan earlier this afternoon. The luncheon, used to spotlight the conference’s all-stars, also kicks off the basketball postseason, as the championship tournament for both sexes kicks off this weekend.
Young, the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Year earned his second straight all-star selection in as many seasons. The sophomore forward from Wall, New Jersey, currently leads all Dolphins scorers with 435 points, good for 17.4 points per game. Young also paces the team in rebounds (198, 7.9 per game), assists (105), and is second on the unit in steals (34).
The CSI Dolphins will kick off CSI’s slate of weekend competition. Meriting the No. 6 seeding in this year’s tournament, the team will travel to face No. 3 Baruch College this Saturday at 1pm.
The CSI women saw two all-star selections, including the second for senior guard Kristen Panariello. A 1st-team all-star selection in 2008, Panariello paces the Dolphins in 2010 with a healthy 12.7 points per game average. The senior has missed just one start despite early-season injuries, and stands 13th in CSI women’s basketball history with 1,090 career points.
The most-prized accomplishment belonged to rookie sensation Katelyn Hepworth. The four-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week in 2009-10, Hepworth has notched an outstanding freshman campaign, averaging 9.8 points and a team-leading 9.0 rebounds per contest, making 20 starts in 23 games. The freshman also leads the team in shooting (50%, 80-160) and blocks (13), and is second on the squad in assists (46) and steals (38).
The CSI women will usher in the playoffs with a home quarterfinal on Sunday, February 21, welcoming No. 5 seeded York College, at 2pm.
