The College of Staten Island gave all it had on the soccer pitch this afternoon but fell to Montclair State University in men’s soccer in a non-conference test played in Upper Montclair. MSU scored twice in the first stanza in what was a 3-0 final. The win improved the team to 5-0-1 while the Dolphins fell to 0-7 to start the year.
MSU got on the scoreboard early, as a Mike Pytlar goal, his second of the season, was fired passed CSI keeper Andrew Brown just 9:29 into the game. Sean Tyree tallied the assist on a sparkling cross that went into the goalmouth for Pytlar. It took some time, but at the 31:35 mark, MSU got all the insurance it would need when Michael Cullen tallied the team’s second goal, giving the hometown team a commanding, 2-0 advantage.
Although MSU controlled play for much of the game, CSI was valiant in the loss, turning back nine shots on goal on what was a 27-1 overall shot advantage for Montclair. Mike Rudden scored the last of the goals at the 66:46 mark off of an assist by Bill Baker and Cullen.
MSU also enjoyed a 14-1 advantage in corner kick attempts. CSI’s Ahmed Elghareib, Hanzah Kwanor, and John Tanna all picked up cautions as well as CSI chalked up 15 total fouls in the game to MSU’s 12.
Tyler Stakiwicz picked up the win, minding goal for all 90 minutes, making one save in the shutout. MSU used a total of 24 players in the contest to CSI’s 16.
The Dolphins will return to action tomorrow, when they face off with visiting Lehman College for their first conference matchup of the season at the CSI Soccer Complex in a 3:3opm start.
