SECOND ANNUAL SERVING FOR A CURE SUCCESSFUL FOR WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Crowds of fans filled the stands as the Dolphins volleyball team defeated the York College Cardinals while raising money in their Second Annual Serving for a Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Game. CSI beat York, 3-1, and extended their CUNYAC record to 5-3 and 11-13 overall. The Cardinals dropped to a 2-6 CUNYAC record and 5-16 overall.
 
The Dolphins took the first set by a close score of 25-21 before the Cardinals tied it up in game two with a 25-18 win. CSI rebelled back in game three with a score of 25-21 then took the final set, 25-19.
 
Leading CSI was Joanna Tepedino with a game-high 13 kills and seven digs. CUNYAC’s Player of the Week, Alba Basha had a total of 17 assists and 15 digs. First year player, Karina Zenkova tallied 12 digs and seven kills.
 
York’s Shanine Bogan had a team-high seven kills while Irma Ruilova and Charlina Gallegos split the digs with 15 and 14, respectively.
 
The Dolphins summed up 18 service aces and 34 kills, York had 10 service aces and 21 kills.
 
Through 50/50 raffles, gift certificate raffles, the selling of baked goods made by Dolphins volleyball team the second annual event helped raise over $600 that will go to the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative.  
 
The College of Staten Island will host Ramapo College on Friday, October 23rd in a 7:00 pm contest.

Vladislav Romanov
Men's Swimming
Vlad Romanov of the men’s swimming team has been named College of Staten Island’s Male Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
He began the month at the ECAC DIII Open. After two days of events, Romanov took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay alongside teammates Timur Rakihimov, Yury Zimarev and Danila Novikov with a 1:32.77 finish that was a NCAA B Cut qualifier.
His 1:49.97 200 Yard Backstroke time was also good enough for first place.  
Romanov completed the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 51.02 which was a new CSI record and new ECAC Record. It also qualified him for the NCAA’s.
 
In the 200 IM, he took 3rd place, finishing at 1:53.85, his personal best and an NCAA B Cut. In the 200 Freestyle Relay with Rakihimov, Zimarev and Novikov they took 2nd place touching in at 1:27.73. Finally in the 400 Medley Relay, the same foursome took first place, touching at 3:23.73 which was also an NCAA B Cut qualifier and a new ECAC record.
 
In the meet vs. Brooklyn College, he took three first place wins.
Nikki Fabozzi
Women's Basketball
Nikki Fabozzi of women’s basketball has been named College of Staten Island’s Female Athlete of the Month for December 2011.
 
Fabozzi led CSI with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in their first conference win of the season over York. In CSI’s four games in December, Fabozzi has averaged 13 points, totaled 18 rebounds and grabbed 9 steals.
 
The 5-9 guard is the 2nd best rounder on the team totaling 48 rebounds thus far this season. Starting in 9 of the 10 games she’s played in, she leads the team in steals with 29 and averages 10.8 points per game.
