The College of Staten Island women’s soccer team fell for the second straight game, falling in overtime to SUNY-Old Westbury by a 2-1 count. The game winner was scored just 1:39 into the overtime frame. With the loss, CSI fell to 3-8-2 overall, while the Panthers improved to 5-6-1.
In a game dominated offensively by the Panthers and played mainly on CSI’s end of the field, the Dolphins were able to keep things close, thanks to heads-up defensive play in the box and timely goalkeeping by CSI’s Mayda Perdomo.
The teams battled for chances in the opening frame, and even though CSI was outshot, 15-5, the game was scoreless at intermission. Perdomo shined by making six saves while OW’s Jennifer Kupfer made a single save in the period.
When play resumed, it was clear that the Panthers would be putting out all the stops for the go-ahead goal, and they did just that. 16:43 into the second stanza, the home team finally hit paydirt, when a Courtney Dixon pass found the waiting leg of Jennifer Campisi, who buried in the shot for the 1-0 lead.
Old Westbury out-shot CSI 22-2 in the second frame, and enjoyed a 7-1 on goal advantage. It was CSI’s one shot on goal, however, that made a deafening mark. With just 1:16 to play, CSI’s Tina Chechel took over possession via a turnover and fired one in past Kupfer to equalize the game at 1-1. The improbable equalizing goal sent the game into overtime.
From there, however, it did not take long for Old Westbury to strike as they hit one home with their first shot of the stanza. It was Campisi again, this time on a feed from Allison Pirone. CSI was outshot 38-7 in the game and OW enjoyed a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.
CSI will be back in action on Monday afternoon when they travel for another out of conference contest against William Paterson University at 4pm.
